In order to properly understand these quotes you must refer to a more informative based bible like the amplified than the new living translation which compared to the original Greek bible is incorrect in many ways!
"The holy God hates sin most in those nearest to him. A sinful state is, and will be, a woful state. Yet they had the tokens of God's presence, and all the advantages of knowing his will, with the strongest reasons to do it; still they persisted in disobedience. Alas, that men often are more active in doing wickedness than believers are in doing good." -Christnotes.org (in reference to Zephaniah 3:1-7)
"The preaching of the gospel is predicted, when vengeance would be executed on the Jewish nation. The purifying doctrines of the gospel, or the pure language of the grace of the Lord, would teach men to use the language of humility, repentance, and faith. Purity and piety in common conversation is good. The pure and happy state of the church in the latter days seems intended. The Lord will shut out boasting, and leave men nothing to glory in, save the Lord Jesus, as made of God to them wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption. Humiliation for sin, and obligations to the Redeemer, will make true believers upright and sincere, whatever may be the case among mere professors." -Christnotes.org (i reference to Zephaniah 3:8-13)
"After the promises of taking away sin, follow promises of taking away trouble. When the cause is removed, the effect will cease. What makes a people holy, will make them happy. The precious promises made to the purified people, were to have full accomplishment in the gospel. These verses appear chiefly to relate to the future conversion and restoration of Israel, and the glorious times which are to follow. They show the abundant peace, comfort, and prosperity of the church, in the happy times yet to come. He will save; he will be Jesus; he will answer the name, for he will save his people from their sins. Before the glorious times foretold, believers would be sorrowful, and objects of reproach. But the Lord will save the weakest believer, and cause true Christians to be greatly honoured where they had been treated with contempt. One act of mercy and grace shall serve, both to gather Israel out of their dispersions and to lead them to their own land. Then will God's Israel be made a name and a praise to eternity. The events alone can fully answer the language of this prophecy. Many are the troubles of the righteous, but they may rejoice in God's love. Surely our hearts should honour the Lord, and rejoice in him, when we hear such words of condescension and grace. If now kept from his ordinances, it is our trial and grief; but in due time we shall be gathered into his temple above. The glory and happiness of the believer will be perfect, unchangeable, and eternal, when he is freed from earthly sorrows, and brought to heavenly bliss." -Christnotes.org (in reference to Zephaniah 3:14-20)
Furthermore on your selection in Zephaniah; Zephaniah is in the old testament, the old testament introduced the law as known as the ten commandments to show those in and throughout their life cannot obtain these goals, and only by Christ can they be saved! whereas the new testament is the message of grace given to us for our generations, making Zephaniah obsolete due to the message carrying out the discipline as according to the law and not the love and grace as according to the new testament!
"The people of Israel were very careless of their duty and interest. Owing to slothfulness and cowardice, they would not be at the pains to complete their conquests. It was also owing to their covetousness: they were willing to let the Canaanites live among them, that they might make advantage of them. They had not the dread and detestation of idolatry they ought to have had. The same unbelief that kept their fathers forty years out of Canaan, kept them now out of the full possession of it. Distrust of the power and promise of God deprived them of advantages, and brought them into troubles. Thus many a believer who begins well is hindered. His graces languish, his lusts revive, Satan plies him with suitable temptations, the world recovers its hold; he brings guilt into his conscience, anguish into his heart, discredit on his character, and reproach on the gospel. Though he may have sharp rebukes, and be so recovered that he does not perish, yet he will have deeply to lament his folly through his remaining days; and upon his dying bed to mourn over the opportunities of glorifying God and serving the church he has lost. We can have no fellowship with the enemies of God within us or around us, but to our hurt; therefore our only wisdom is to maintain unceasing war against them." -Christnotes.org (in reference to Judges 1:21-35 and including 36)
once again another old testament quote made obsolete because the new testament, After Christ's crucifixion, brings the grace message above the message of the law!
"The men of that generation turned away from God, they had not kept his ordinances. God gives them a gracious call. But they said, Wherein shall we return? God notices what returns our hearts make to the calls of his word. It shows great perverseness in sin, when men make afflictions excuses for sin, which are sent to part between them and their sins. Here is an earnest exhortation to reform. God must be served in the first place; and the interest of our souls ought to be preferred before that of our bodies. Let them trust God to provide for their comfort. God has blessings ready for us, but through the weakness of our faith and the narrowness of our desires, we have not room to receive them. He who makes trial will find nothing is lost by honouring the Lord with his substance." -Christnotes.org (in reference to Malachi 3:8-11 and including 1 and 12)
"In the time mentioned at the close of the foregoing chapter, a fountain would be opened to the rulers and people of the Jews, in which to wash away their sins. Even the atoning blood of Christ, united with his sanctifying grace. It has hitherto been closed to the unbelieving nation of Israel; but when the Spirit of grace shall humble and soften their hearts, he will open it to them also. This fountain opened is the pierced side of Christ. We are all as an unclean thing. Behold a fountain opened for us to wash in, and streams flowing to us from that fountain. The blood of Christ, and God's pardoning mercy in that blood, made known in the new covenant, are a fountain always flowing, that never can be emptied. It is opened for all believers, who as the spiritual seed of Christ, are of the house of David, and, as living members of the church, are inhabitants of Jerusalem. Christ, by the power of his grace, takes away the dominion of sin, even of beloved sins. Those who are washed in the fountain opened, as they are justified, so they are sanctified. Souls are brought off from the world and the flesh, those two great idols, that they may cleave to God only. The thorough reformation which will take place on the conversion of Israel to Christ, is here foretold. False prophets shall be convinced of their sin and folly, and return to their proper employments. When convinced that we are gone out of the way of duty, we must show the truth of our repentance by returning to it again. It is well to acknowledge those to be friends, who by severe discipline are instrumental in bringing us to a sight of error; for faithful are the wounds of a friend, Proverbs 27:6. And it is always well for us to recollect the wounds of our Saviour. Often has he been wounded by professed friends, nay, even by his real disciples, when they act contrary to his word." -Christnotes.org (in reference to Zechariah 13:3 including 1,2 and 4,5,6)
Every single one of your comments has come from the old testament, and therefore, are not relate-able to the message of grace, where many of us have fallen away from!,"For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace." -Romans 6:14 meaning that the law, and the consequences for breaking it, no longer apply to anyone's life because Christ has taken all sins upon him to make us clean and offers that cleanliness to all those accepting and willing to follow him!
I have taken your quotes, showed you what they truly mean, and now in the hope that you will see, is translation for the modern man. I will leave you with one quote in an attempt to have you take these explanations and make sure you think them over and read, completely, the verses before giving it as an example to someone else and making, in their eyes, a fool of yourself. "And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand." -Matthew 7:26
BTW, you do know Roddenberry was an atheist, right?
My favorite ST:TNG episode is "Who Watches the Watchers?" What's yours? I mean, you do watch ST:TNG and aren't being some little sheepy poser following a ridiculous meme, right?
Enjoy this comment while you can, folks! It's probably gonna be hidden!
While I do enjoy criticism from people, others go to far, I understand that Roddenberry was atheist, however, I try not to focus on how something is dressed up, but rather the meaning behind it.
It is true that, compared to the average christian, Atheists tend to know a bit more of the bible, though it is sad, it is true.
I do not watch ST:TNG, but that does not make me a "sheepy poser", and I do understand where your coming from.
No, I will not hide this post, a lot of other people would, but I would not dare stoop to such a low level of cowardice!
though my last statement may be a bit harsh "us CHRISTians", just don't tend to care as much about religious debates as the average atheist, this is the truth.
Thank you for your comment, but it does not phase me.
Simple. We read the Bible. It's all in there, really.
An Angry Jealous God (Zephaniah 3:6-10 NLT)
God's Human Slaughter Fest (Zephaniah 1:7:18 NLT)
Fire Breathing Dragons (Job 41:1-34 NAS)
Murder and Slavery (Judges 1:21-35 NLT)
Don't Rob God (Malachi 3:8-11 NLT)
Kill False Prophets (Zechariah 13:3 NAB)
Have fun arguing!
